Jackson, Mississippi — The Young Democrats of Mississippi (YDMS) officially announced its return as a chartered member of the Young Democrats of America, launching a renewed statewide effort to engage, develop, and mobilize the next generation of leaders while expanding organizing efforts across all 82 counties.
The organization's return comes at a pivotal moment for Mississippi and the nation. As young people navigate important conversations surrounding voting rights, representation, economic opportunity, and the future of democracy, YDMS seeks to ensure that young Mississippians are organized, informed, and equipped to participate in shaping the decisions that affect their communities. Recent developments, including the Supreme Court's decision in Louisiana v. Callais, have underscored the importance of civic engagement and youth leadership.
"The rechartering of the Young Democrats of Mississippi marks the beginning of a new chapter focused on our renewed efforts to organize, educate, and mobilize young people at the local level, with an emphasis on building sustainable county-based chapters and increasing civic participation statewide," said Lydia Grizzell, President of the Young Democrats of Mississippi.
"As we rebuild this organization, our goal is not only to grow membership, but to develop the next generation of leaders who will serve their communities, shape public policy, and strengthen civic engagement across Mississippi," said Elijah Karriem, Vice President of the Young Democrats of Mississippi.
As part of its relaunch, YDMS will host its first Virtual General Body Meeting on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. The meeting will introduce the organization's leadership team, outline priorities for the year ahead, and provide opportunities for young people across the state to become involved in local and statewide organizing efforts.
YDMS invites students, organizers, young professionals, and emerging leaders from across Mississippi to attend the General Body Meeting and join the growing movement to build the next generation of Democratic leadership in Mississippi.
